Why non-profits is different

Non-profits ask a lot of their people. Staff often take on several roles, work long hours for the mission, and accept lower salaries than they could earn elsewhere. Good benefits are one of the clearest ways an organization can show it values that commitment, and they help keep experienced staff from burning out or leaving.

At the same time, every dollar is accountable to a board, donors or grant funders. We help non-profits find coverage that fits a fixed budget, explain the options clearly to leadership, and keep the plan steady through funding cycles, so staff can stay focused on the work that matters.

Who works in non-profits?

Non-profits often run on a dedicated mission-driven team: an executive director, program staff, development or fundraising roles, and part-time or grant-funded positions. Budgets are tight and sometimes tied to grant cycles, so benefits have to stretch. Staff often accept lower pay than the private sector, which makes good benefits a big part of keeping them.

Which plans usually fit, and why?

  • A small group plan gives full-time staff stable coverage, with contribution levels set to fit the board-approved budget.
  • A QSEHRA or ICHRA can be a strong fit for grant-funded organizations that need a fixed, predictable benefit cost per employee.
  • Voluntary dental, vision and life coverage add value with little or no cost to the organization.

What compliance rule should you know?

Small tax-exempt employers may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit when they buy group coverage through the SHOP marketplace. Eligibility depends on having fewer than 25 full-time-equivalent employees, average wages under an annual limit, and paying at least half of employee-only premiums. For tax-exempt organizations, the credit is refundable against payroll taxes, and it can be claimed for two consecutive years. We'll check whether you qualify.
